Constant Overwhelm vs. Consciously Engaging in Life
“The conscious means being awake to your own reality. It is home to choice, logic, and self confidence”” states one of my favourite holistic psychologists, Dr. LePera (@the.holostic.psychologist).
Ninety percent of the time most of us are running on a program called the unconscious. The brain conserves energy and wants to give you the most predictable life experience, even if it’s one that has you feeling miserable. When running on 90 % we are engaging in habitual activities (being on autopilot), we are unaware, often dominated by emotions and memory. The other 10 % of our brain is conscious, aware, present, dominated by logic and reasoning and allows are more space for choice.
You are able to “perform” this thing called life but it always feel like things are happening beyond your control. And they are. Since you are not present you’re always reacting to the past. “Most of the people I work with describe this as constant overwhelm” sayd Dr. LePera.
It’s important not to live on autopilot because doing so can limit personal growth, reduce life satisfaction, and disconnect you from your true desires and goals. Here are several key reasons why consciously engaging in life, rather than letting routine drive your actions, is essential:
Increases Self-Awareness and Emotional Health
Living on autopilot often means we’re not fully in tune with our emotions or reactions. This disconnect can lead to unaddressed stress, anxiety, or dissatisfaction. Being mindful and intentional brings greater awareness to our emotional state, helping us recognize and address issues before they escalate. Self-awareness also fosters emotional intelligence, allowing us to build stronger, more authentic relationships.Enhances Decision-Making and Goal Alignment
When you’re constantly in autopilot mode, you may end up making choices out of habit rather than consciously aligning them with your values or long-term goals. Intentional living helps you evaluate whether your actions contribute to the life you genuinely want to create. You’re more likely to make decisions that support your growth, purpose, and fulfillment.Strengthens Relationships and Social Connections
Living consciously allows you to engage more deeply with others, improving the quality of your relationships. When you’re fully present, you listen more actively, communicate more effectively, and show greater empathy. These qualities not only enhance existing relationships but also make it easier to build meaningful new connections, as people feel genuinely valued and heard.Encourages Growth and Learning
Routine often leads to stagnation, as autopilot reinforces the same actions and thought patterns. When you step out of autopilot, you create space for growth, curiosity, and new experiences. Consciously challenging yourself to try new things, learn new skills, or break old habits stimulates your mind, broadens your perspectives, and opens up fresh opportunities for personal and professional growth.Increases Life Satisfaction and Fulfillment
Living on autopilot can make life feel monotonous and unfulfilling. By intentionally engaging with each moment, you cultivate a sense of purpose and appreciation for life. Being present allows you to savor small joys, recognize meaningful experiences, and feel a greater connection to your journey. This engagement with life enriches your overall sense of fulfillment and happiness.Helps You Avoid Regret and Missed Opportunities
When on autopilot, you may fail to seize opportunities or make decisions that could bring significant positive changes. Over time, this can lead to regret over things left untried or goals left unachieved. By staying aware and intentional, you’re more likely to act on opportunities that align with your aspirations, ensuring you’re living fully and authentically.
In summary, living consciously empowers you to make choices aligned with your deepest values and goals, deepens your relationships, fosters continual growth, and enriches your sense of purpose. Breaking free from autopilot enables you to live with intention, transforming routine into a journey filled with meaning and joy.
